Atlanta-based black therapists to launch new offerings for black men during mental health awareness week

To celebrate Mental Health Awareness Week and World Mental Health Day on October 10, Black Female Therapists (BFT) is launching the launch of its new Black Male Therapists (BMT) repertoire with a week of virtual events focused on mental health and celebration-oriented. , fundraising and personal growth.

When BFT founder and therapist Amber Dee had to look for a new therapist after hers struggled with health, she faced a tough search for a black female therapist. If she had issues and was a black female therapist herself, could other black women have issues as well? This question led her to create a directory that would make it easier for people to find therapists with specific attributes.

Her goal has always been to make finding therapists easier for everyone, including women, men and non-binary people. Black Male Therapists is the first extension of the Black Female Therapists repertoire.

“Black men don’t ask for mental health help as often as women because they don’t want to be seen as weak and that’s what they think asking for help is. But proactively asking for help when you’re having trouble is actually one of the strongest things you can do, ”Amber Dee said of the message she hopes to get across with black therapists.

Black Male Therapists officially launched on October 8 with their Unmasking Mental Health virtual event, a weekend-long celebration of self-care and mental wellness for black men and their allies.

Amber Dee added, “If you see someone in the mental health space who looks like you, it makes you more comfortable sharing your struggles. Even if you are not ready for therapy, you can still start working on your mental health. With BFT and BMT we are trying to create a more holistic approach to mental health and to meet people where they need us.
